Being an empath can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you’re a beautifully attuned, sensitive individual, uniquely able to understand and heal the pain and suffering of others. On the other hand, if you don’t know how to protect and look after yourself, you can quickly become drained and depleted by taking on energy and emotions that aren’t your own.
Experiencing other people’s emotions can lead to depression, anxiety and even addictions if you don’t allow yourself time out to recharge. In order to keep yourself physically and mentally healthy, it’s important to understand your limits and practice self-care.
Here are five simple ways to ensure your beautiful empathic gifts don’t become a burden:
Build a Protective Bubble
Prevention is always better than cure. If you know you need to enter an overwhelming situation, perhaps going into a crowded place or interacting with a challenging person, then protecting yourself beforehand can help you avoid the drain on your resources.
Imagine a bubble of light surrounding you. It can be white, golden or violet – whichever feels right to you. The wall of this bubble allows love to flow in and out but keeps you protected from thoughts and feelings that aren’t your own.
You can also try one of these protection rituals, particularly if you’re a healer.
Wear Protective Crystals
Many crystals have protective properties. Some, like black tourmaline or smoky quartz, shield you from toxic energy, preventing it from entering your body. Others, such as lapis lazuli, deflect unwanted energy, sending it back to where it came from. Carry a stone in your pocket or wear it as a favorite piece of jewellery – just remember to cleanse it regularly.
Take Some Deep breaths
Bringing yourself back into your body is key to reducing the snowballing overwhelm that empaths commonly feel. The simplest technique is to focus on your breathing. Where in your body do you feel the breath? How does it feel? Are your breaths fast or slow, deep or shallow? Don’t try and change anything – just observe.
Even doing this for ten breaths can help you step away from all those thoughts and feelings so you can sort through which are yours and which aren’t.
Hug a Tree
Empaths are often particularly sensitive to the healing power of nature. Use this to your advantage! Stand barefoot in the grass and allow all that nervous energy to flow out of your body and into the ground; hug a tree and draw on the tree’s strength and stability; or swim in the ocean and let the saltwater cleanse you of all those toxic emotions.
Shake it off
Wild animals often give themselves a big shake after a frightening experience. We can do that too, literally shaking the negative energy out of our muscles and nervous system. Put on your favourite song and dance in whatever way feels good to you. we have also Provide certified energy healing practitioner
